Avianca Airlines History

Avianca, the world’s second oldest airline after KLM, celebrated its 100th anniversary in December 2019. It is the oldest airline in the Western Hemisphere. Avianca became a formal member of Star Alliance on June 21, 2012, after a process that lasted around 18 months after the initial announcement of its invitation to join the alliance.

Avianca (and its merger equivalent, TACA) became full members of Star Alliance on November 10, 2010. Avianca’s admission into Star Alliance resulted in the termination of its codeshare deal with Delta Air Lines and the establishment of a new codeshare arrangement with United Airlines. TACA and United Airlines had been codesharing since 2006. Avianca and TACA were both officially welcomed to Star Alliance on June 21, 2012.
